Gregory's Thoughts

NBC has had a pretty good season so far. Greg Berlanti’s drama Blindspot has been a stable performer on Mondays and has already scored a second season renewal. The drama airs behind The Voice, a timeslot which was previously held by the now weaker The Blacklist (despite lower ratings, the show remains extremely strong when Live+7 ratings are taken into account). The second Chicago franchise spin-off Chicago Med has also done a good job on Tuesdays, alongside parent shows Chicago PD and the show which started it all, Chicago Fire.  Comedy has been an area in which NBC has struggled for the past few seasons however, the late summer addition The Carmichael Show, which has been renewed for a second season, managed to muster some buzz and good ratings wile quirky workplace comedy Superstore has surprisingly been showing some promise. On the other hand, Telenovela has had a tough time maintaining its audience however I expect the show to be renewed (unless the ratings nosedive). The Jennifer Lopez drama Shades of Blue did better than expected but is not in the safe zone yet although early signs are looking good.

Despite NBC’s newfound “success”, they have had their fair share of shortcomings. Heroes Reborn flopped, as well as The Player. The Mysteries of Laura failed to attract a larger audience in season 2 but appears likely to return for another season. Grimm’s Friday ratings are starting to sour while Undateable’s ratings are poor, but not as bad as the already cancelled Truth Be Told.

However, all is not lost! NBC has the largest number of mid-season shows than any other network. The mid-season slate includes the dramas Heartbeat, Game of Silence and Emerald City. Heartbeat (formerly Heartbreaker) was set to air late last year but was pushed back due to the lead actress, Melissa George’s unexpected pregnancy. Emerald City was ordered straight to series, then cancelled, then revived while Game of Silence is based on a Turkish series Suskunlar. NBC also has the multi-camera comedy Crowded (which looks D.O.A.) and imported comedy You, Me and the Apocolypse.

NBC needs to continue adding riveting dramas onto their schedule like Blindspot, while also figuring ways to continue the show’s rating success to ensure it remains a strong asset on the schedule. The Blacklist quickly burned out when moved to Thursdays and I am sure NBC does not want the same to happen to Blindspot. NBC are great at launching big, high-budget and buzzy dramas like Revolution and Believe, both of which were prematurely cancelled, but seem to struggle to maintain their success partly due to poor scheduling. Also, it would be fitting for NBC to launch several successful dramas outside of the Chicago franchise. NBC seem to be on the right track for comedies, with Superstore, Telenovela and The Carmichael Show showing potential to be stable performers. NBC will need to continue this streak by adding more quirky, workplace and possibly family comedies to the schedule which have a strong, individual voice in order to generate buzz among the general public.

UPDATE: NBC has renewed The Blacklist, Blindspot, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Superstore.

UPDATE 2: NBC has ordered Powerless and Trial & Error.
UPDATE 3: NBC has ordered Chicago Justice and This Is Us and Midnight Texas.
UPDATE 4: NBC has ordered two more comedies: Marlon and Great News.
UPDATE 5: After tense negotiations, The Carmichael Show is still in limbo for a third season order. Sources say NBC wants to order at least 10 episodes although 20th wants more. Cruel Intentions is the last pilot still in contention at NBC. Sources say the show could be ordered for summer although season staking rights and a lack of a compatible show is making negotiations harder.
UPDATE 6: The Carmichael Show has been renewed for season 3 (consisting of 13 episodes).

Chicago Justice
Chicago Justice, toplined by Philip Winchester, revolves around Chicago State’s Attorney’s team of prosecutors and investigators as they navigate heated city politics and controversy head-on while fearlessly pursuing justice. It joins the mothership Chicago Fire and fellow spinoffs Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.
Chicago Justice Stars Winchester, Carl Weathers, Nazneen Contractor, Joelle Carter and Ryan-James Hatanaka. Wolf, Peter Jankowski, Matt Olmstead, Derek Haas, Michael Brandt and Arthur Forney executive produce for Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment.

This Is Us
Starring Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us follows an ensemble — some of them sharing the same birthday — whose life stories intertwine in curious ways.
Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan and Ron Cephas Jones co-star in This Is Us, executive produced by Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Charlie Gogolak, Requa and Ficarra.

Midnight Texas
Welcome to a place where being normal is really quite strange. From Niels Arden Oplev, the visionary director of Mr. Robot, and based on the hit book series from author Charlaine Harris (True Blood), comes a journey into a remote Texas town where no one is who they seem. From vampires and witches to psychics and hit men, Midnight is a mysterious safe haven for those who are different. As the town members fight off outside pressures from rowdy biker gangs, ever-suspicious cops and their own dangerous pasts, they band together and form a strong and unlikely family.

The cast includes François Arnaud, Dylan Bruce, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Arielle Kebbel, Sarah Ramos, Peter Mensah, Yul Vazquez and Sean Bridgers.

Monica Owusu-Breen serves as writer and executive producer. David Janollari and director Niels Arden Oplev also executive produce. Midnight, Texas is produced by Universal Television and David Janollari Entertainment.

Powerless

In the first comedy series set in the universe of DC Comics, Vanessa Hudgens plays Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. It’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.

Trial & Error
In this outrageous fish-out-of-water comedy, bright-eyed New York lawyer Josh Segal heads to a tiny Southern town for his first big case. His mission? To defend an eccentric, “rollercizing” poetry professor (John Lithgow) accused of the bizarre murder of his beloved wife. Settling into his makeshift office behind a taxidermy shop and meeting his quirky team of local misfits, Josh suspects that winning his first big case will not be easy, especially when his client is always making himself look guilty. “Making a Murderer” can be funny!
Great News

Getting along with some colleagues can be rough, but working with your mom? That’s a whole other story. When Katie, an up-and-coming news producer, finds out her overbearing mom has rejoined the workforce as an intern at the station where Katie works, it might just be the worst news ever. But, with her biggest cheerleader at her side, Katie might finally get the recognition she deserves. The laughs hit close to home in this new office comedy from executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and the producers of “30 Rock.”

The cast includes Briga Heelan, Andrea Martin, Adam Campbell, Kimrie Lewis-Davis, John Michael Higgins and Horatio Sanz.

Tracey Wigfield serves as writer and executive producer. Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and David Miner also executive produce. Beth McCarthy-Miller directs. “Great News” is produced by Universal Television, Little Stranger and 3 Arts Entertainment.
Marlon

Loosely inspired by the real life of star Marlon Wayans, this update to the classic family comedy centers on a loving(but immature) father committed to co-parenting his two kids with his very-together ex-wife. While his misguided fatherly advice, unstoppable larger-than-life personality and unpredictable Internet superstardom might get in the way sometimes, for Marlon family really always does come first — even if he’s the biggest kid of all.

The cast includes Marlon Wayans, Essence Atkins, Notlim Taylor, Amir O’Neil, Bresha Webb and Diallo Riddle

Christopher Moynihan serves as writer and executive producer. Marlon Wayans, Rick Alvarez, Michael Rotenberg and director Andy Ackerman (pilot) also executive produce. “Marlon” is produced by Universal Television, Wayans Brothers Entertainment, Bicycle Path Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.
